In terms of its fame, this painting now rivals works such as Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa (1503) and Van Gogh’s Sunflowers (1888). Few artworks have inspired filmmakers, cartoonists and other artists to the extent that The Scream has done.

The Scream was created twice by Edvard Munch in painted versions as well as in several other different mediums. The two oil paintings are the best known and now reside in National Gallery of Norway and the Munch Museum. There were also two pastels produced.

The screaming figure personifies existential horror. A precursor of this image is a drawing of a man (Munch himself) on a similar bridge, with a blood-red sky above. Six of these, including one that was hand-coloured by Munch, are in the museum today. Versions of Edvard Munch's The Scream: Two paintings, respectively with tempera and oil on unprimed cardboard, probably from 1910, and pastel version from 1893 and two lithographs from 1895, the one to the left is the hand-colored version. Painted in 1893, Munch’s iconic Scream was donated to the National Gallery in 1910. The Scream is based on an experience Munch had when he was walking with two friends in Ekebergåsen on the outskirts of Christiania.
